No one can guarantee you a #1 listing on a search engines like Google or Yahoo. Yet, there are many companies that make false promises like a top ten search engine listing. There are no shortcuts and no secrets, but there are a few simple steps you must take if you want to get listed better that your competition. It is called Search Engine Optimization or SEO.

You will have to submit your website to search engines to make it accessible to the search engine “Spiders“, “Crawlers” or “Bots“. Before you submit your website, you need to add “Meta Tags“.  The meta tags are found between the <head> and </head> section near the top of the web page. To add meta tags you must modify your HTML pages.  It should look similar to the example below:

<head>
 <meta name="keywords" content="place, your, own, keywords, here">
 <meta name="description" content="put a short sentence describing your site">
 <title>Title will goes here</title>
</head>

Replace text in red to personalize the meta tags to make it search engine friendly. Use up to 50 words or short phrases in the “keywords” line. Use 1 or 2 short sentences in the “description“  line and use 1 quality sentence for your “title”.  Use the same words that your visitors would use to search for your website.  You may copy the above code and paste to your website’s text editor in the <head> section and them personalize it with your own keywords.

Here are some other hints that help you to do the job:

  • You don’t have to spend money for a search engine submission service. Most reputable search engines will accept your website submission for free.
  • Use as many keywords as you can squeeze in within the context of the visual part of your page as you are working on it.
  • It may take up to 3 months for the search engines to “crawl” your site.  It will take even longer to place your website where it belongs.  There are no guarantees that your site will be listed on any given search engine.
  • The more pages that reference your site the higher page rank and higher your site in search results page.
